GCC plans 1,562 modern bus shelters across Chennai

Chennai to get 11 upgraded bus shelters with AC, Wi-Fi, CCTV and more

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has signed memoranda of understanding with seven companies to construct and maintain 11 air-conditioned bus shelters at key locations across the city.

The shelters will follow a standardised design and be equipped with air-conditioning, CCTV cameras, WiFi, ramps connected to footpaths, bus route information, lighting, puff-panel roofing, toughened or laminated safety glass, USB charging points and panic buttons.

GCC has identified 1,562 bus shelters for modernisation, with the design and facilities to be decided based on location and feasibility.

Some new shelters will also be built without air-conditioning.  Shelters affected by Metro Construction would also be replaced.

The 11 shelters will be located at DMS on Anna Salai, Mylapore Bus Stand, Jawaharlal Nehru Road in Vadapalani, Vijay Nagar Bus Terminal in Velachery, both sides of Vadapalani Bus Stand, Little Mount in Guindy, Arcot Road, Alandur Metro and both the north and south sides of Egmore.  Each shelter is expected to cost between Rs 40,000 and Rs 48,000 and will be funded through corporate responsibility (CSR) contributions.  Under the agreement, the participating companies will also bear recurring maintenance expenses, including cleaning and security, in exchange for advertising space.

The GCC is also planning to develop foot-over bridges with escalators and lifts at 56 locations through a public-private partnership model.  Detailed financial feasibility reports are currently being prepared for 10 of these locations.
